Psyllium Husk
Plantago ovata
Psyllium husk is the light, mucilaginous outer seed coating of Plantago ovata, long kept in kitchen cupboards as a gentle bulk-forming fiber to support regularity and mild digestive comfort.
Traditionally used for.
- •Traditionally used as a gentle bulk-forming remedy to support regular bowel movements and ease occasional constipation.
- •Traditionally mixed into fluids or soft foods to add soothing, hydrating bulk for loose stools or mild diarrhea, helping normalize stool texture.
- •A long-standing household use has been to add psyllium to morning drinks or porridges to support a feeling of fullness and regular digestive rhythm.
Simple preparations.
- •Psyllium drink: Stir 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon psyllium husk into 8 ounces (240 ml) of cold or room-temperature water or juice, drink immediately, then follow with another 8 ounces (240 ml) of water. Use once to three times daily as needed, never let sit thickened before drinking.
- •Psyllium in cereal or yogurt: Mix 1 teaspoon psyllium husk into a bowl of cereal, porridge, or yogurt, eat promptly, and drink a full glass of water alongside. Use once daily to support regularity.
- •Soothing poultice for irritated skin: Combine 1 tablespoon psyllium husk with enough warm water to make a soft paste, apply a thin layer to the irritated area for 10 to 20 minutes, then rinse gently. For external use only.
Cautions.
- !Psyllium swells and absorbs water, so always take with a full glass of water to avoid choking or intestinal blockage.
- !Start with a small amount and increase gradually to reduce gas or bloating; if you develop severe abdominal pain or persistent discomfort, stop use and check with your doctor.
- !Do not give honey-containing preparations to children under one year of age when using with sweetened foods; for any use in pregnancy, or if you take prescription medications, check with your doctor.
