Marshmallow Root

Althaea officinalis

Marshmallow root, Althaea officinalis, is a soothing, mucilaginous root long kept in household medicine cabinets for gentle relief of irritated throats and dry coughs. It is used in simple, water-based preparations like teas, syrups, and compresses to coat and calm inflamed or dry tissues.

Traditionally used for.

  • Traditionally used as a soothing demulcent for dry, irritated throats and coughs, often given as a warm tea or syrup.
  • Traditionally used as a gentle emollient when made into a poultice or compress for minor skin irritation, dryness, or chafing.
  • A long-standing household remedy for soothing inflamed mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, used as a gargle or rinse.

Simple preparations.

  • Marshmallow root tea: Simmer 1 tablespoon of dried root in 2 cups of water for 10 to 15 minutes, then strain. Sip warm, up to 3 times a day for throat comfort.
  • Marshmallow syrup: Simmer 1 cup water with 1/4 cup dried root for 20 minutes, strain, then stir in 1/2 to 3/4 cup honey (do not give to children under one year). Take 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon as needed for soothing the throat.
  • Compress or poultice: Simmer 2 tablespoons dried root in 1 cup water for 15 minutes, cool enough to handle, strain and soak a clean cloth. Apply warm to the affected skin for 10 to 20 minutes, repeating 2 to 3 times daily.
