Turmeric

Curcuma longa

A warm, sunny root used in kitchens and home medicine closets, turmeric brings gentle warmth and earthiness. Traditionally kept as a tea, syrup, or poultice for everyday aches and to support digestion and comfort.

Traditionally used for.

  • Traditionally used as a warming digestive aid after heavy or rich meals, taken as a tea or in food.
  • A long-standing household remedy for mild muscle or joint soreness, applied as a warm compress or poultice to the affected area.
  • Traditionally used for soothing sore throats or hoarseness when made into a honey or glycerin syrup and taken by the spoonful.

Simple preparations.

  • Turmeric tea: simmer 1 teaspoon ground turmeric or 1 tablespoon freshly grated root in 2 cups water for 10 minutes, strain, sweeten with honey if desired, drink 1 cup up to twice daily (do not give honey to children under one year).
  • Turmeric syrup for throat: simmer 1 cup water with 1/4 cup grated turmeric and 1/4 cup grated ginger for 10 minutes, strain and stir in 1/2 to 1 cup honey or an equal amount of glycerin while warm, cool and store in the fridge; take 1 teaspoon as needed for throat comfort. Honey never for children under one year.
  • Warm turmeric compress: mix 2 tablespoons powdered turmeric with enough warm water or plain yogurt to make a paste, spread on a clean cloth, cover with plastic to protect clothing, apply to sore area for 15 to 20 minutes, repeat once or twice daily as needed.

Cautions.

  • !May act as a mild blood thinner, so use cautiously if you have bleeding disorders or before surgery.
  • !Large amounts can cause stomach upset or heartburn in sensitive people; start with small doses to judge tolerance.
  • !May interact with blood sugar or blood pressure medications; check with your doctor if you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a chronic health condition.
