Oat Straw
Avena sativa
Oat straw, the green tops of Avena sativa, is a gentle kitchen herb long kept in household apothecaries for calming the nerves and supporting everyday stamina. It is mild, nourishing, and suited to regular use as a warm infusions or a cooling tea.
Traditionally used for.
- •Traditionally used as a nervine infusion for mild nervous tension, restlessness, and mental fatigue.
- •Traditionally used as a nourishing, food-like herb to support convalescence and general tiredness.
- •Traditionally taken as a gentle tonic to support sleep quality when used as part of an evening ritual.
Simple preparations.
- •Full infusion (nourishing cup): 1 heaping tablespoon dried oat straw per cup, pour just-boiled water over, cover and steep 15 to 20 minutes, strain. Drink 1 to 3 cups daily, warm or cooled.
- •Cold infusion (to preserve cooling, mineral qualities): 2 tablespoons dried oat straw per quart of cold water, cover and steep in the fridge 8 to 12 hours, strain and sip through the day.
- •Soothing sitz or compress: make a strong infusion with 3 tablespoons dried oat straw per quart of water, steep 20 minutes, cool to comfortable temperature, soak a clean cloth and apply to lower back or over the chest for 10 to 20 minutes.
Cautions.
- !Oat straw is generally mild, but people with grain allergies, especially to oats, should use caution and test a small amount first.
- !If you have gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, choose oats labeled gluten-free because cross-contact can occur.
- !Honey should not be used for children under one year when sweetening oat preparations.
- !If you are pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or have a chronic medical condition, check with your doctor before using regularly.
