Nettle

Urtica dioica

Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a common, nourishing green herb gathered from spring growth, traditionally used as a strengthening, blood-building, and cooling household remedy. Fresh or dried nettle works in simple kitchen preparations for everyday use.

Traditionally used for.

  • Traditionally used as a spring tonic to support general vitality and to replenish the body after winter.
  • Traditionally used as a nourishing tea for people needing extra minerals and gentle support for circulation.
  • A long-standing household remedy for mild seasonal discomfort when taken as a warming or cooling infusion depending on preparation.

Simple preparations.

  • Nettle leaf tea: steep 1 heaping teaspoon dried nettle (or 1 tablespoon fresh chopped) in 1 cup just-off-boil water for 10 minutes, strain, drink 1 to 3 cups a day.
  • Nettle infusion (for stronger mineral extract): cover 1 ounce dried nettle leaves with 1 pint boiling water, let steep, covered, for 6 to 8 hours or overnight, strain and sip up to 1 cup twice daily.
  • Nettle compress or rinse: make a strong tea by steeping 2 tablespoons dried nettle per cup of boiling water for 15 minutes, cool to comfortable warmth, apply as a warm compress for sore areas or use as a hair rinse after shampooing.

Cautions.

  • !Fresh nettle can sting if handled without gloves, which causes local skin irritation; drying or cooking removes the sting.
  • !Rarely, nettle can cause mild stomach upset or an allergic reaction in sensitive people; stop use if irritation occurs.
  • !Nettle can affect blood pressure and blood sugar, so check with your doctor before use if you take medication for blood pressure, diabetes, or if you are pregnant or nursing.
